DESCRIPTION

Optional Wayna Picchu entrance fee: $30 if you want to ask about availability and pay at the booking time. Also optional Machu Picchu Mountain for $30 (3 hours hiking).
Optional bus ticket from “Aguas Calientes” to Machu Picchu costs: $ 12.50 each way and both $25, let us know in advance or you can buy it there.

This is a good option if you’re short of time. On the third day after lunch at “La Playa” the whole group takes a bus to Santa Teresa and that is where you will be separated from the group to continue the journey towards “Hidroelectrica”. Once there, you have 2 options:

Take the train which costs 28.00 USD** since “Hidroelectrica” to the village of “Aguas Calientes” (there will be a person waiting for you at the train station).
Or walk from “Hidroelectrica” to “Aguas Calientes” (without guide) and a person will pick you up at the entrance of the town.
*Extra transport and train ticket from “Hidroelectrica” to “Aguas Calientes” are not included.
Once you will arrive to “Aguas Calientes”, the itinerary is still the same as the original 5 days & 4 nights but this time, you will have a new guide and a new group of people.

  • Day 5: “Aguas Calientes” – Cusco

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa

We will pick you up at your hotel at approx. 04:30 a.m. and depart at 05:15 a.m. by bus towards Mollepata located at an altitude of 2,850 masl, through the Andean zone. We will continue our trip until Soraypampa (3,800 masl). We’ll walk for about 2 hours until lunchtime and then continue for 4 more hours to our campsite in Soray.

Day 2: Soray Pampa – Chaullay

The dawn is impressive. As soon as we get up we will see the majestic Salkantay Mountain. At approximately 07:00 a.m., we’ll have breakfast and continue our trip which will last 7 to 8 hours during what we will find the difference among the altitudinal floors; we’ll enter into a kind of canyon that will lead us to the skirts of Salkantay. After three hours of walking, we will have lunch. We will then ascend until we reach a cove and then descend to the edge of the jungle. We will arrive in Chaullay this day where we will camp.

Day 3: Chaullay – “La Playa” – Santa Teresa

From here, the warm weather begins. After lunch, we will continue through the valley bottom where we will observe the way of living of the settlers in this zone and enjoy the hot springs of Cocalpampa, as well as the waterfalls of Waynapoco if time permits.* and continue the rest of the way by bus to Santa Teresa where we will spend the night.
*Optional visit to the Thermal baths (s/.10 entrance fee)

Day 4: Santa Teresa – “Aguas Calientes”

After breakfast, we will continue to the village of “Hidroelectrica” where we will stop for lunch. We will then continue walking along the railway tracks for roughly 2 and ½ hours until “Aguas Calientes” where we will rest in a hostel after we had dinner. This night, the guide will explain to us about the tour of the next day.
Optional additional activities.
• Canopy (company “Cola de Mono”) South America’s highest Zip Lines. Approximately 15 minutes from Santa Teresa. Duration roughly 2 hours. Price $30pp. If you wish to do it, please book when buying a tour.

Day 5: “Aguas Calientes” – Cusco

On this day, we’re going to visit the great ruins of Machu Picchu. To get there for sunrise, we’ll start to ascend at 04:00 a.m for approx 1 and ½ hours until we reach Machu Picchu where you will have a guided tour of the ruins for 2 hours and free time afterward to climb Wayna Picchu if you have the ticket. We will then take the train back to Ollantaytambo. Transfer by bus/ private transport back to your hostel (Lunchbox with breakfast included).

We recommend that you take

  • A backpack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trek.
  • Rain gear (jacket and trousers if available) or rain poncho (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco).
  • Strong footwear, waterproof trekking boots recommended.
  • Sandals or jogging shoes for comfort while at camp.
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleeces. Thermal wear is also recommended, especially for sleeping.
  • Sleeping bag.
  • Flashlight/headlamp and batteries.
  • Camera, films and batteries (batteries consume more quickly under cold conditions).
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain and cold.
  • Sunblock.
  • Insect repellent – minimum recommended 20% DEET – no malaria risk has been reported
  • Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, raw fruits, muesli, etc.
  • Swimsuit + small towel (if you wish to go to the hot springs in “Aguas Calientes”).
