Inca Jungle Trek Machu Picchu 4 Days and 3 Nights

Day 1: Cusco To Santa Maria

You will be picked up between 07:45 and 08:00 a.m from your hostel. Then, you will be driven through the stunning Sacred Valley and dropped off at the 3,200 meters high of “Abra Malaga”. Here, you will change the biking kit provided (gloves and helmet) and receive a 20-minute briefing by your tour guide. Then, the fun starts… freewheeling down quiet but challenging roads, past changing landscapes, while the jungle’s edge rears up to the small but charming town of Santa Maria. Here, you will have lunch at a local restaurant, then buy snacks for the follow day rest your legs and enjoy a cold beer before a dinner. Here, you will stay in a family run hostel and sleep in either single, double or triple rooms*.

Ask for the optional rafting tour that will take two hours to do it (level of rapids depends of the season) 35 extra dollars.

Day 2: Santa María – Santa Teresa

You will wake up at around 07:00 a.m, shake off your weary limbs and enjoy the finest indigenous coffee prepared by your landlady for a 06:30 a.m breakfast. Under dawn skies, you will begin your walk, which gets progressively steeper, until arriving at a welcoming family restaurant in Santa Maria where you can relax in hammocks, admiring the coca plantations and receive refreshments whilst being entertained by the family monkey. After a short walk, you will reach a traditional Inca Trail which winds around precipitous slopes and sheer drops for approximately half a mile. The descent continues for just over two hours until you reach Qellomayo, a small town, where you will have lunch.

From Qellomayo, it is a short walk until you reach Santa Teresa where you will spend the night at another family run hostel and sleep in either single, double or triple rooms*.

Day 3: Santa Teresa to “Aguas Calientes”

You will wake up and have breakfast at around 07:00 a.m. After breakfast, you will walk to Colpani taking in the views until you reach the restaurant where you will have lunch at “Hidroelectrica”. From here, it is only about a two and a half hour flat walk to “Aguas Calientes”, the base town for Machu Picchu.

The dinner is included at a local restaurant before retiring to your hostel with hot water and private bathrooms. Briefing with the guide.

Day 4: Machu Picchu

An early start today as you will walk to Machu Picchu to arrive at 06:00 a.m, which with a bit of luck will coincide with a beautiful sunrise! Your guide will leave no stones unturned but feel free to challenge their knowledge of Inca history in your 2-hour tour. Afterwards, you’ll have free time to dally with the llamas and show off your photographic skills. Those who still have the will can tackle Wayna Picchu we recommend booking it in advance.

A frequent bus service takes visitors back to “Aguas Calientes”, where you will catch the train to “Hidroelectrica” or Ollantaytambo (times subject to Peru Rail availability) and then the tourist bus (Pedro) to Cusco.

*If you would like to book your ticket to climb the Wayna Picchu Mountain, you might be on the second group, otherwise you will miss the 2-hour tour in Machu Picchu.

We do not recommend taking the 3-day Inca Jungle Tour during the rainy season, as landslides are frequent on the road between Santa Maria and driving can be dangerous. If there are landslides, you may also have to spend the night somewhere along the road (in the taxi) and wait until morning to continue on foot – unfortunately with setback you would likely miss your Machu Picchu entrance date and train to come back to Cusco and you would need to pay to get with a chance these tickets. Generally, there are only problems between January and March, for the rest of the year landslides are not a problem. During the rainy season, the safest way to travel between Santa Maria and Santa Teresa is on foot.
