Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – “Hidroelectrica” – “Aguas Calientes”

You will be picked up with private transport between 07:45 and 08:00 hrs  from your hostel. Make sure to bring with you something to read or write, or use the time to catch up on some sleep. The drive to the hydroelectric station will take about 7 or 8 hours in favorable conditions. Short (10-15 minutes) stops will be made along the way to stretch your legs also we will stop for lunch at Santa Teresa. Upon arrival at the hydroelectric station, it will be a 2-3 hour (12km) walk along the railroad to “Aguas Calientes” by your own – don’t forget your flashlight as you may be walking with it in the dark!! Overnight at the hostel in “Aguas Calientes”.

Day 2: Machu Picchu-Cusco

It’ll be an early wake up, as you’ll want to be there for sunrise. You will also have a 2-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu and some free time before needing to return to “Aguas Calientes” to catch your train back to the hydroelectric station (train times vary depending on the day). Back at the hydroelectric station, you will meet up with your transport again and make the journey back to Cusco, stopping along the way to purchase food and drinks.

Tip

Save cash by buying snacks/water for the whole trip at the Mega supermarket in Cusco.
Wear long socks sprayed with repellent under your trousers for Machu Picchu visit.
Bring extra batteries for your flashlight if you want to walk up to Machu Picchu very early.
Bring a warm jacket and sweater for the trip back, the mountain pass can be very cold!
Try to use your flashlight as little as possible when walking as it will attract mosquitoes.
